Curtains

John finished his 6 albums project with this wonderful acoustic album: Curtains. It's my 2nd favorite of the six albums serie (with Inside of Emptiness).

On this record, John just sings and plays acoustic guitar, bass & piano on some songs ('Your Warning', 'Time Tonight' & 'Leap Your Bar', which is entirely played with the piano).
Carla Azar of Autolux also plays drums in some songs and John's friend, Omar Rodriguez Lopez of the Mars Volta also plays some guitar (like on 'Anne's much beautiful solo). John and him played the same guitar part during the solo together, while using the same amp (as John and Josh Klinghoffer already did on 'I'm Around' on the album Inside Of Emptiness).

To describe this album in three words, i'd say it is at the same time very warm, sad & beautiful, three adjectives put together to make the more intimate & one of the more achieved of John Frusciante's albums.
The songs are so gorgeous and the lyrics so intense, you just have one thing to do: to listen the music, closing your eyes and losing yourself in your own thoughts...
All songs are more beautiful than each other in this album: from 'The Past Recedes' with its wonderful solo, to 'Your Warning' & 'Time Tonight' which freeze you on place with their deep & genuine lyrics, passing by the powerful crescendos of 'Control' & the transcendental 'Ascension', you can't overlook this album, this is just pure music with pure lyrics, all recorded in John's own living-room...

This album definitely won't disappoint you: it's not an usual acoustic album, it's much more than that, it's a real masterpiece !

A Sphere in the Heart of Silence

This album, the next to last of the six albums serie, is entirely made of raw electronic music. It's as far of a Red Hot's record as Frusciante has made.
This is also the first record which was realeased under the name of John Frusciante/Josh Klinghoffer, as Josh Klinghoffer is, on this album more than a guest appareance; he has entirely written two songs 'At Your Enemies' & 'Surrogate People' (except John's vocal part on this last) and sings on most of the song with John Frusciante (except the much beautiful 'My life'). He even sings alone on two songs: 'Communique' and 'At Your Ennemies'.
The voice of Josh Klinghoffer is perfect along John Frusciante's. We can even say that the two voices complement each other.

'Sphere', the first song which is an instrumental one, was supposed to last more than 30 minutes but was shortened to be put on a record.
The song 'Walls' was played in performance 8 (which was one show of the ten 'performances' serie, where John Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer played mostly electronic music). There is even an amateur video of it on youtube, here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqJgQ2tgwAM, where we can see the demo of this song. John Frusciante danses and does abstract vocals while Josh Klinghoffer plays drums and some electronic music. There is also the song 'The Days Have Turned' at the end of this performance, which lasts nearly 15 minutes).

A Sphere in the Heart of Silence is a real experience for a listener who has never listened electronic music before, but as we have seen on John's precedent records, all new music experiences are good with an artist like John Frusciante.
It also reveals all the creative power that Frusciante have; he can pass from indie rock to electronic music, without forgetting alternative rock, with an astounding ease, and always keeping interested his listeners. He is a real artist !

Inside Of Emptiness

This album was recorded in March 2004 in Los Angeles, with John's friends Josh Klinghoffer and Ryan Hewitt (the engineer). It also features a guest appearance of The Mars Volta’s guitarist, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.
It's most an electric album (unlike its predecessor, DC EP, which was entirely acoustic).
This is also the first time that John experimented what he called "joined guitars" with Josh Klinghoffer: on 'I'm Around's second chorus, they intertwin their two guitars through the same amp ( which puts together the two separate guitar parts as one part, that's why we only hear one guitar part).

John also wrote 3 songs on this album in reference to the British occultist Aleister Crowley (he said that he read his biography while writing these songs, and so that they were, somehow the result of it's reflection about Aleister Crowley); 'Emptiness', 'I'm Around' and '666' (which was the name Aleister Crowley often used, to defy and reject the strict religious education he has received by his parents).

Opening with 'What I saw' and containing raw songs full of power as 'Look On', this is one of my favorite of the six project (with Curtains).
The wonderful 'I'm Around', also full of power by its gorgeous lyrics, definitely show us that John Frusciante has also a real talent as a songwriter.

With true and intense lyrics, I'd say he is even one of the best today's songwriter.

DC EP

It's the third album of the 6 record in 6 months project.

The songs of this album (4 in total) were written during the By The Way Tour.

It's one of the only albums of John where there isn't any synthesizer. It was recorded in Washington DC (it was besides named for that), at Inner Ear studios, where one of the favorite band of John, Fugazi, record their albums. John's friend, Ian Mackaye produced the album. A friend of Fugazi, Jerry Busher played drums, while John played guitar on a Les Paul junior through a Marshall amp.

To resume the album in one sentence, it's only 15 minutes long, but it's 15 minutes of pleasure...

Automatic Writing

Automatic Writing is the first part of an improvisation gig of Ataxia (the band that John Frusciante has made with Joe Lally, Fugazi's bassist, and Josh Klinghoffer).
This was for about two weeks in February 2004. They played two shows and recorded two records. They recorded bass drums and guitar parts , and at night John writed the vocals parts with the lyrics for most of the songs. Joe Lally wrote the vocals of one song and Josh Klinghoffer for two songs. At first, they wanted to all record in one day, but they had nearly 90 minutes of music. So they recorded it in 4 days and played two shows at the Knitting Factory. They finally released the recording in two parts, this one, Automatic Writing, in August 2004 and the 2nd one in May 2007.

John said that the word 'Ataxia' is Greek for 'disorder'
They named the record Automatic Writing in reference to the surrealist movement initiated by the French writer André Breton (who his the author of the famous Manifeste du Surréalisme (1924) and Second Manifeste du Surréalisme (1930); he describes in these books a new theory of esthetic experience which has completely upset all the fields of creation, with artists such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, or Man Ray...) .
This movement consisted in writing things without reflecting to this and without searching any meanings to what they writed. André Breton imagined this techniques consisting in writing all that went through his mind, without paying attention to the coherence of the sentence, or grammar or even vocabulary to free the power of his subconscious. (this movement was mostly inspired by the subconscious's theory of Freud). The first work written with this technique is Les Champs Magnétiques, written by André Breton and Philippe Soupault.

(This is, by the way, one of the reason I got interested in Ataxia's records (for the reference to the automatic writing, as I already enjoyed a lot surrealists things...).

Anyway, now I'm going to speak about music...
This is a really powerful music made of long improvisations (all songs last over 5 minutes, some songs even lasts 12 minutes, as the amazing 'Montreal'), with a nearly chaotic atmosphere, with John Frusciante's keening vocals and expressive bursts of fluid guitar.

One advice: if you enjoy the long improvisation of John in RHCP's shows, go now to buy this record !!!!

The Will To Death

It's the first record of the 6 albums in six month project.

In spite of being Shadows Collide With People predecessor, The Will To Death doesn't assimilate a lot this last.

This is one of the numerous talents of John Frusciante; to always create different and interesting albums. There's only a handful of artist capable of that, and John Frusciante belong to this category. You can listen all his albums in one entire day, and you'll never bored yourself, there's always diferent elements. We easily recognize John Frusciante's sound, (that's why I can get up off my bed the morning in one second listening the first notes of 'Going Inside'...) but he knows how to make all his albums sound different of each other, while keeping is own sound and way of playing.

One of the differences regarding Shadows Collide With People, is that on Shadows, John wanted all perfect (he even recorded it in studio), whereas on this album, he intentionally kept the imperfections, to make a more "raw" album, like in 60's - 70's, with groups such as Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones or Talking Heads. That's why we can hear at several times, John turn pages or even walk.

It once again, contains powerful songs, with powerful lyrics ('I can't wait for life...' in 'A Loop'/'The face in the Mirror is not me...' in 'The Mirror'/'The will to death is what keeps me alive' in 'The Will To Death') and a beautiful aerial instrumental (as always...), 'Hellical'.

An album which promises a lot for the 5 followings...

Shadows Collide With People

It's John 4th solo album. The songs were writen during the By The Way Tour and recorded, for the first time, in a real studio.

With songs as 'Song To Sing When I'm Lonely' or 'The Slaughter', it's contains John's more reached songs as much by the lyrics as by the music.
It seems to be the favorite albums of critics too. But I'd say that we can't really trust critics. I even really doubt some critics even hear John's records before giving their opinion... To say, for example, that this album is a "draft" to Red Hot's album, it's completely non-sense ! We can't compare John's solo work and RHCP's album ! Moreover, John's solo records are real albums, which by no means,aren't drafts for RHCP's albums !

This is also the first time he collaborates with his multi-instrumentist friend, Josh Klinghoffer but it's isn't him who plays drums on the final version of Shadows because he felt too uncomfortable in a studio recording, in spite of this, we can anyway hear him sing in several songs (he sings the second part of the lyrics on 'Omission'). Frusciante also collaborates with Flea (the bass on 'The Slaughter') and Chad Smith (it's him who play drums in the final version of Shadows).

Most of the songs were first based on a acoustic demo (which we can freely download on his website), but there are also in the final version a lot of synthesizers. Some songs are even just made with it, as the aerial '23 Go In To End', which properly transcends you and makes you enter another dimension...
Two other songs are also synthesizers songs: 'Failure 33 Object' & '00ghost 27'.
For songs containing numbers, John said in an interview that 27 was the age he was when he spent his worst year. For 33 and 23, it was the age of him and Josh when they recorded the album (he wasn't aware of it at all when they made the record, he only realized that after the recording of the songs !).
This also contains rock songs ('Second Walk' & 'This Cold').

As I've already said before, most of the demos and the acoustic base of the songs can be freely downloaded on his website (besides of course the one's only made with synthesizers).
Frusciante decided to put it on his website to show the initial version with Josh Klinghoffer at the drums, as he have made a real work but just don't have recorded the final versions.
It is really interesting to see the base of these songs, and the acoustic ones are really raw, which makes it more intimate (the acoustics versions of 'Regret', 'The Slaughter' and 'Song To Sing When I'm Lonely' let us with a strange effect; you know this one when you can't do anything but just listen and listen again the song because it's inside you...).
To conclude, I'd say it's one of the album you must have in you're record collection.

From The Sounds Inside/ Free Internet Album

These are songs & demo songs that John has put on his website in August 2001 for his fans, which shows us once again that John really make music for the passion of music and not for other superficial interests...
It was first naturally named Free Internet Album, but after a survey, John's fans chose the name of From The Sound Inside.
Most of the songs are in the continuation of To Record Only Water For Ten Days.
There are, as always, some intrumentals (the sublime 'With Love'...) and strong lyrics' songs ('I Will Always Be Beat Down', 'Fallout'...).
Juste one advice: go to download it !!!!

To Record Only Water For Ten Days

John 3rd solo album has almost nothing in common with his two precedents records. Whereas these last are sad and filled with a dark atmosphere, To Record Only Water For Ten Days is the result of a total rebirth. After 5 years of addiction and depression, John Frusciante finally decides to start over from scratches and to begin a new life of entire devotion to music, and this album perfectly reflects this new life beginning. The lyrics and even the title evocate a spiritual revelation ( 'You don't throw your life away/Going inside/You get to know who's watching you/And who besides you resides...' in 'Going Inside' - 'Extra time when you think it's over/Live a life when you've rolled over and died/I don't feel pain..." in 'Invisible Movement')

As soon as the album's open with the first chords of 'Going Inside', which anounce the other songs' atmosphere, we recognize John Frusciante's sound ('Murderers' could as well have been a Red Hot Chili Pepers' song on Californication).
It was also his first solo album since he had reintegrated the group (in 1998).
